The 27th Hour
Joana Cardoso in Lisbon15 de noviembre de 2013
Did you know there are 27 hours in a day ? This is the time a man needs to realise what a woman can do in 24 hours. From numerology predictions to lucky numbers, each number carries its own set of mysteries and memories. We are aware of them to diff ering degrees, but they infl uence choices, foster beliefs and are sometimes used as emblems of identity for a whole generation. Both versatile and anonymous, the number 27 makes us think of the fascinating hypotheses behind the mysterious “27 Club”. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Amy Winehouse are just some of the rockers who left the gig during their 27th year. It is impossible to think of the number now without thinking of the fast-paced lifestyle of these rock’n’roll stars…
From 1 to 27 years, here are the 27 memories of a member of this resolutely rebellious, feminine gen eration.
1 IN THE SAME YEAR
→ Elvis died and the Sex Pistols released “Never Mind The Bollocks”. All eyes were on our neighbours in Spain, who held their fi rst democratic elections after the death of Franco.
2 MUSIC STYLES ON THE RADIO
→ Electronica from Kraftwerk, the punk rock of the Ramones, vaguely hippy things like Steely Dan and of course, the disco of Donna Summer, The Trammps and Eruption.
3 MYTHICAL PHOTOGRAPHY
→ I was with my Dad in the alleys of Venice. I’m wearing these really space-age pink sunglasses and my Dad has a cool 70s look.
4 HOW DID YOU IMAGINE YOURSELF AS AN ADULT ?
→ All I wanted was to be President of the Republic !
5 YOUR FIRST INSTRUMENT
→ None — I’ve always been rubbish at music.
6 FIRST MEMORY OF SCHOOL
→ At fi rst, it made me cry, because I found the whole school environment really bizarre and I didn’t know anyone.
7 THE POSTERS WHICH COVERED YOUR BEDROOM WALL
→ I didn’t have any posters ; I preferred to put my own drawings on the wall. I liked to tell stories with these life-size characters.
8 YOUR FAVOURITE DANCES
→ With my neighbours, we devised dance routines for all the Bananarama songs.
9 YOUR FIRST LOVE
→ A school friend. We wrote beautiful love letters, without ever actually speaking to each other.
10 YOUR FAVOURITE SPORTS
→ Defi nitely basketball ! I was a massive fan of Magic Johnson and the LA Lakers.
11 A FUNNY POLITICIAN
→ I remember that Mario Soares had a very interesting face. He reminded me of a little puppy with those great saggy cheeks — so cute !
12 THE GROUPS YOU LISTENED TO ON YOUR WALKMAN
→ Depeche Mode The Cure, Madonna, Neneh Cherry, Herois do Mar, Fine Young Cannibals, De La Soul, Guns N’ Roses, Duran Duran.
13 YOUR FAVOURITE ACTORS
→ Harrison Ford and Anthony Hopkins.
14 YOUR BEST LOOK
15 YOUR HAIRCUT
→ I had long hair, but it was shaved underneath with the shape of an upside-down cross at the nape.
16 YOUR MOST REBELLIOUS MOMENT
→ Leaving to go and live in Lisbon on my own to study cinema.
17 YOUR PASSIONS AND DREAMS
→ Cinema and music.
18 CLUBS AND DJS
→ My favourite clubs were Le Swing in Porto and the Alcantara Mar in Lisbon. My favourite DJs were DJ Harvey, Sonar Kollektiv and DJ Vibe.
19 YOUR FAVOURITE FILM QUOTE
→ Quite a few of my favourite fi lms are from this period, and I always remember that scene in the toilet in Trainspotting, and the Robert Rodriguez fi lm From Dusk Till Dawn. I love it when Seth says to Katie : “I may be a bastard, but I’m not a fucking bastard.”
20 YOUR BIRTHDAY PLAYLIST
→ There was Homework, the fi rst Daft Punk album, Endtroducing by DJ Shadow and loads of other things like Jazzanova, Roni Size and, of course, Kruder & Dorfmeister.
21 YOUR BEST HOLIDAY
→ A trip to Brazil with one of my best friends. We left from Mexico DF for Guatemala, to travel the Pacifi c coast. We made some great Mexican friends; it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
22 THE DISHES YOU LIKE TO COOK
→ Rice, rice and more rice!
23 YOUR CLIP OF THE MOMENT
→ I remember Weapon of Choice by Fatboy Slim because I really liked Spike Jonze, and Chirstopher Walken’s performance was brilliant !
24 YOUR CRAZIEST PROJECT
→ Having a child.
25 THE TRACKS AT THE TOP OF YOUR IPOD LIST
→ All the tracks from Presidential Suite by Gonzales.
26 TRINKETS YOU’VE SAVED
→ Mostly my son’s toys.
27 YOUR FAVOURITE CLUB 27 MUSICIAN
→ Jean-Michel Basquiat.
