THE NEW SPORTS SPECIAL HONORS THE FAMED SWISS MOUNTAINEER AND FREERIDER WITH TRIBUTE TO HIS HOME-TOWN MOUNTAIN
Freeskier and Swatch Proteam athlete Samuel Anthamatten is a man of the mountains: he grew up in Zermatt, at the foot of the legendary Matterhorn, and still lives in the Swiss Alpine village today. A certified professional mountain guide, he has climbed “big walls” in Switzerland, Canada, Patagonia and the Himalayas, established a new alpine route across the North Face of the Matterhorn, and made the first ascent of the Jesemba South Face (7,350 meters) in Nepal. Inspired by Samuel Anthamatten and his amazing achievements as a mountaineer and freeskier, Swatch is proud to present SWATCH THE ROUTE, a rugged Sports Special celebrating his extraordinary talent and his commitment to Zermatt and the Matterhorn.
Today’s climbers come armed with light-weight, high-tech tools, but the early days saw Alpine pioneers outfitted with rough, often rudimentary equipment —little more than an ice ax, ropes and exceptional courage. The dial of SWATCH THE ROUTE shows a map of the Matterhorn with a red line charting the route of the first successful ascent to the 4,478 meter summit. The black hour and minute hands show an ice ax and hook – still essential tools for anyone brave enough to challenge the mountain. Samuel Anthamatten commented, “The first successful climb of the Matterhorn followed a line that until 1865 was considered absurd and unconquerable, but in the end it is the ‘simplest’ and most logical route. Thanks to Swatch I had the opportunity to design a watch for my “home mountain”, and from now on, every time I climb the Matterhorn I’ll be wearing the watch on my wrist.”
Thousands of Alpine adventurers have climbed the fabled peak, and a few, like Samuel Anthamatten, have even traced new routes to the top. Today the Matterhorn remains both a daunting challenge and a world-renowned symbol of Switzerland and exceptional achievement.
SWATCH THE ROUTE (SUOZ199S) is available in a limited edition of 4,478 pieces – recalling the height of the Matterhorn - in special packaging which takes up the mountaineering theme as an extension of the watch design. A canvas pouch evocative of pioneering mountain equipment holds an inlay Plexiglas box and within it the new watch.
07.05.15SWATCH CELEBRATES FUTURING BY EVA & ADELE IN VENICE
Swatch and the world’s most prestigious contemporary art exhibition have joined forces to support art and artists at the 56th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Renowned for its collaborative work with artists, today Swatch is proud to present the first of several Swatch Art Specials to be released during the preview days of La Biennale Arte 2015: FUTURING BY EVA & ADELE.
EVA & ADELE are contemporary artists based in Berlin. The duo coined the word “futuring”, turning “the future” into a verb designating a time unfinished, caught up in the process of developing and revealing itself, challenging people to take an active role in shaping their own future. Futuring is also the principle of the artists’ performance, the unquestioned freedom of sexual self-determination that EVA & ADELE themselves represent. Their work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Europe and around the world, including the MoMA PS1 in New York, the Kunsthaus in Zurich and many other public collections worldwide, although as they say, “wherever we are is museum”. Indeed, their presence transforms any venue into a museum, and from May through August their work and paintings will be on show in the Swatch Art Specials gallery, a dedicated space within the Swatch presence at the Arsenale Nord.
The Swatch Art Special created by EVA & ADELE in collaboration with Swatch is called FUTURING BY EVA & ADELE. Its gold-colored, glittery dial backgrounds three global messages from the artists, presented in bright pink lettering (their favorite color): WORLD COMMUNICATIVE, GLOBAL PLASTIC, FUTURING, and is enhanced by a transparent pink plastic strap with a gold-colored print pattern. EVA & ADELE consider their Swatch to be conceptual and sensual at the same time, inspired by the EVA & ADELE GESAMTKUNSTWERK (TOTAL WORK OF ART). They see the packaging and the watch as a biographical sculpture. The EVA & ADELE heart-head logo at the end of the bracelet represents the performative element of their internationally world-renowned appearances. The EVA & ADELE–invented word from 1991, FUTURING, which EVA & ADELE have used since then as a synonym for performance and art, stands in the center of the dial and symbolizes the artists’ avant-garde approach.
FUTURING BY EVA & ADELE is available in a limited and numbered edition of 585 pieces, in a shiny box in pink and gold, with the limited edition number appearing both on the back of the watch and inside the Special Packaging. An unlimited but otherwise identical edition will be available from early June.
08.04.15“SWATCH & ART FROM THE DUNKEL COLLECTION” SOLD AT SOTHEBY’S HONG KONG FOR HK$ 46,7MILLION / US$ 6 MILLION
Swatch is proud to announce that one of the world’s largest Swatch collections in private hands, comprising more than 5,800 Swatches and art collected over 25 years, has been sold for HK$46.7 Million / US$6 Million to a European Institution. According to Sotheby’s, the winning bid was placed by phone after over 30 bids from at least 3 bidders.
The seller, Mr Paul Dunkel, commented after the sale, “I have been very happy and emotional to see the international interest in my collection over the past months. This is a true testament to the universal appeal of Swatch. I would like to deeply thank Sotheby’s for their hard work, as well as my art advisor, 1858 Limited, for expertly managing all aspects of the sale on my behalf. I wish the new owner of these 5,800 pieces all the best and hope the collection will bring to others as much joy as I have had with it over the last 25 years of this adventure.”
02.04.15SWATCH FACES 2015 BRINGS ART & ARTISTS FROM SHANGHAI TO VENICE
Swatch partners with the 56th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia, calling artists from The Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai to Venice to live art at the Arsenale.
The love affair that is Swatch & art is on the move again, from Shanghai to Venice and months of exciting action at the 56th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia. Swatch and la Biennale di Venezia have renewed and strengthened their partnership in advance of the upcoming 56th edition of the world’s most prestigious exhibition of contemporary art, opening in May under the title “All the World’s Futures” given by its curator, Okwui Enwezor, and runs through November 2015.
Swatch has great plans for its romance with art and Venice. Taking up its Swatch Faces theme, the brand will present art as a force for change in the work of artists-in-residence from The Swatch Art Peace Hotel. In little over three years, Swatch has hosted more than 150 artists in the landmark hotel on the Bund in Shanghai, where it has dedicated two entire floors to workshops and living quarters for artists from all over the world, along with generous space for performances and exhibitions of their work.
And now the artists are coming to Venice! The 18 artists currently living and working in The Swatch Art Peace Hotel will form a bridge from Shanghai to Venice and la Biennale Arte 2015. Their “Swatch Faces” (photographic portraits and representative artwork) will be presented on an Art Wall installed at the Swatch Pavilion. From May through November 2015, selected artists-in-residence from The Swatch Art Peace Hotel will be working “live” as guests of Swatch at Swatch Faces 2015 – Pavilion at Arsenale. A historic address in the Arsenale — shipyards of the Republic of Venice and a major exhibition site for la Biennale — Swatch Faces 2015 – Pavilion at Arsenale will host a series of artists-in-residence, their personal exhibitions and a range of other exciting events.
The other major, must-see venue at the 56th International Art Exhibition of la Biennale di Venezia is the Giardini area, Swatch Faces 2015 – Pavilion at Giardini, site of thirty historic national pavilions. Here too, Swatch has a surprise in store: a renowned contemporary artist will create a work for Swatch on site.
There’s more to be said and even more to see, including new Swatch Art Specials to be launched in Venice during the exhibition. Further details will be made known in the weeks to come, and at the press conference set for May 7, 2015 at the Piccolo Teatro Arsenale, Venice.
