Ryan Grees
Ryan Grees is a communication design student of the School of the Arts in Aachen who has, in recent years, proved himself to be an illustrator and graphic designer of considerable merit. Born in the Philippines and currently based in Germany, 27 year old Grees—one of the winners of the 2009 SWATCH MTV Playground competition—describes his characteristically playful works as 'hybrids', which seamlessly utilise hand-drawn qualities, graphic design techniques and photography. Intricate and intuitive mark-making as well as a witty, sometimes-poignant use of text and sloganeering typify many of his artistic endeavours. Grees derives creative inspiration from not only his love of rock music and film and games soundtracks, but also a wide variety of other sources - ranging from time travel and time manipulation, to landscape or the human form. For SWATCH, Ryan created I AM A CHILD OF THE NIGHT (GZ249).
