As Sara Goller retired from the sport in 2012, after 9 years, in 2013 a new era begins as Laura partners with her new teammate, Kira Walkenhorst.
Anyone who knows Laura also knows that she will do her very best to continue playing at the top of the game with her new partner Kira as well. The Olympic Games 2016 are the clear goal for the new team.
Laura’s slyness and her great tactical feeling, combined with technical cunning and massive slashing power, are promising signs that the new duo will become one of the most powerful and well known teams on the World Tour.
Laura is a very lively person both on and off the court. She’s quick, smart, controls the ball well and has a very good overview of the court. She’s the defender patrolling the backcourt with guile, intuition and a hint of cheekiness!
In the future, Laura would like to focus on becoming a teacher but has not yet decided anything specific about her life after beach volleyball.
Laura Ludwig is a very ambitious and hard working person that drives her team with a laidback attitude. Being a very open person, she makes people smile and is simply always in the middle of the action.
Laura is also very spontaneous. Once during a competition, she decided to dance with the Beach Volleyball dancers and learned the choreography in a few minutes before joining the girls and performing with them in between sets.
Together with her partner they are Ludwig-Walkenhorst, Germany’s number 2 ranked beach volleyball team. Both Kira and Laura are full-time professional beach volleyball players who live and train at the Olympic Beach Volleyball training centre in Hamburg.
Kira started playing indoor volleyball in 1995 at age five in the city of Essen. She grew up in a volleyball family. Her father played first division in Germany, her mother second division. Her two siblings also play professional volleyball.
At the age of 15 she moved to Berlin to play for the German Youth National Team and later the Junior National Team.
After that she played professional indoor volleyball for 3 more seasons before she decided that beach volleyball would be her future.
As a team Kira and Laura are training to participate in the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.
Kira’s specialty is her attack. She has a good height of 1.84 m, and also has a great reach, which helps when attacking. When she gets a hold of the ball it’s breathtaking to see her smash it.
Kira has finished a 3-year apprenticeship as a physical therapist. Right now she is working for the German military in their sports program.
Following her professional beach volleyball career she intends to work as a physical therapist.
Kira Walkenhorst is one of the most talented young German beach volleyball players. She is very ambitious and constantly open to learning new things.
It’s always a joy to be around her, as she approaches life in a very positive way. At the same time she knows when to get serious and is focused to the max during games.
