Born in 1964, in Saint-Etienne, Jean-Michel Othoniel first came to the attention of the art establishment through his sculptures made from sulfur, when they were shown in Kassel back in 1992. These works - poetically-inclined and boldly advocating a universe of ultimate freedom - typify his interest in metamorphosis and ongoing use of materials with reversible properties, such as his now-preferred medium of glass. Othoniel's reputation has grown significantly since the early 90s and he continues to push artistic boundaries in many ways. Not least by having exhibited his work in contrasting contexts and locations, ranging from a large Parisian subway station, to prestigious galleries in the same city, as well as major museums in New York, Seoul and Tokyo.
