Koshii’s Electricity Man (SUOZ102S) for Swatch features a man with a power station emerging from his head, and an electric socket for a nose. Brought to life in advertising-ink colours and a two-tone, screen print like handling of light and shade, the watch is provocatively funny and visually captivating. Koshii also designed the Special Packaging, where he merges images of a traditional heavy-industry power station with contemporary wind turbines. Together, the watch and packaging represent both a playful exploration of contemporary themes and a wry vision of the future—or perhaps the present—as seen by Takashi Koshii.
Born in 1981 in Tochigi, Japan, Takashi Koshii lives and works in Tokyo, where he blends traditional and contemporary techniques, often in a playful and ironic manner. For most of his illustrations, he uses torn paper, glue and tweezers to assemble his images, adapting the traditional Japanese art form in an innovative and creative manner. Responding to the complex and dense urban landscape of Tokyo, Koshii participates in the ever-cycling exchange of ideas and input taking place in contemporary Japan.
