The designs for “BLUE WILD FACE” (SUOZ166S) and “WILD FACE” (SUOZ167) are multi-coloured drawings on a black ground, recalling the stark imagery and expressive power of Art Brut. As the designers themselves put it, “We were immersed in art with an outsider perspective, in an exploration of the fine line between genius and madness, and of that which we cannot understand.” Taking inspiration from outsider art, “we created the somewhat crazed graphics and bold, bright colours of the ‘monster’ face and contrasted it with a plain and classic black strap. The design examines the dichotomy of the split personality, like a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.”
Takaya Goto was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan; Lesley Chi in Taipei, Taiwan, and both completed their post-graduate design education in the United States. GOTO DESIGN is renowned for creative, multidisciplinary collaborations with both curators and artists. Among many other fruitful collaborations, the artists worked with Massimiliano Gioni to develop the identity for The 55th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia.
