Emmanuelle Antille explains her design inspirations:
“As an artist, I found the project of creating a Swatch watch very interesting: how to think about an everyday object, a simple and functional object that is a part of people’s everyday life, an object of desire for a brand that is very close to its public, and very iconic. All these thoughts were absolutely new to me and to my artistic work. From a series of photographs that I made around the sub-ject of tattoos and the Family Leu - an illustrious family of tattoo artists - I chose here to continue this work for Swatch and use patterns, tattooed by Filip Leu, and to work with the watch as a skin substitute, a removable graft, a strange decoration or a trophy.”
Emmanuelle Antille was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1972. Between 1991 and 1996, she attended the Ecole Supérieure d´Art Visuel, in Geneva, before undertaking postgraduate studies between 1997 and 1998 at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, in Amsterdam. Her work is always compelling and beautifully considered, cutting across the mediums of photography, film, video, sound, installation, as well as music, to portray and explore the intimate relationships and rituals occurring between teenagers, lovers, mothers and daughters, and the ways in which different groups of people interact with their communities. Antille has garnered significant critical acclaim for her creative endeavours, gaining various official awards from prestigious cultural institutions around the world. The artist memorably represented her native Switzerland at the Venice Biennale, in 2003, and has exhibited her work extensively, both in solo and group shows, at many noted galleries, museums and festivals in varied locations including Berlin, Reykjavik, Tokyo, Zurich, Chicago, New York, L.A., Sarajevo, Rome, Moscow, Paris and Madrid.
