Bright lights, power loops and drones racing at speeds of more than 90 mph – the 2018 Drone Racing League Semifinals brought futuristic action to the BMW Welt in Munich, Germany on July 28. Twelve elite FPV (First Person View) drone pilots went head to head at the sold-out event with only one pilot soaring to first place.
Thousands of fans came to watch the event and many more spectators saw the races in the public viewing area at the Swatch Truck in the Fan Zone. Inspired by the live action, visitors could also learn to fly a drone with our on-site gaming station and simulator.
Among the most challenging twists, turns and tunnels that the DRL pilots encountered was a huge Swatch gate that rose 16 feet (5 meters) above the course. The pilots had to navigate their drones up through the tower. More than 500 drones were brought to the event. Fully developed by the DRL, these drones were used by the pilots and the extras replaced any that were damaged during the races.
Tune in to ESPN on September 6 to see the third DRL Allianz World Championship Season take flight! At every stop on the tour, only one winner will qualify for the final in Saudi Arabia.
