About him

Clemens was born in Steyr (OÖ) a small volleyball capital of the region and stayed in volleyball facilities from the first moments of his life.

As skinny and tall player his way from a local hero to the best Austrian Indoor team and of course the Nationalteam didn´t take long. He played Champions League and made the way to the Final Four.

In summer, he didn´t go for vacations, he played Beach Volleyball. 2001 he took Silver at the under 23 European Championships and was awarded with a wildcard for the seniors , where he finished 4th two weeks later.

2002 he took the opportunity to play with Nik Berger as a professional. They trained a lot in Rome and already in 2003 they finished first at the European Championships in Antalya (Tur). As Nr. 7 of the world they easily qualified for the Olympic Games, before an knee-injury stopped his was.

From 2006-2008 he teamed up with Peter Gartmayer, and crowned this partnership with European Gold in Valencia and the 9th place at the Olym-pics in Bejing. After the retirement of his partner, he had to find a new player on his side and decided for Matthias Mellitzer, an indoor professional and nearly freshman on the beach. In 2010 he also made his way to the European podium, missing the swing for gold, they took silver.

After a difficult year in 2011 Clemens saw his only chance to qualify for the Olympics by changing partner and teamed up with Alex Horst from 2012 on. They reached their goal London 2012 by taking the final ticket in the Continental Cup. At the home European Championships in Klagenfurt 2013 everything was prepared for another European-Medal for Clemens, but after a contact at the net, his knee and dream was destroyed for the third time. But 10 month later in Cagliari he stepped on the European Po-dium again, taking Bronze!

There is still one big goal to be achieved – an Olympic Medal! Gold Silver Bronze!!!

Personality

Alex is one of the most emotional player on the World Tour. He celebrates each point, is loud and likes to play with the referee and the opponents. In training sessions all drills have to have a competitive character – he likes to play, he likes to win and is totally pissed if he loses. The second side of him is shown when he is at home with his family and his two kids. He is calm and does not want to speak up or even take decisions.

Specialities

Defense of hard driven balls as well as jump serve.

Sidelines

Alex is totally focused on Beach Volleyball and does not really care about what is after his career.

About him

Finishing a sport-school he received a broad education in sports. His favorites were Volleyball, as his mother played on highest Austrian level, gymnastics and of course football.

He made it to the Austrian press, when he skipped school by saying he is ill, and then going with his indoor-team to an European Cup to Denmark and serving an ace to win the game.

His international star began to rise in 2006 when he won as an unknown Austrian in front of the homecrowd in Klagenfurt against the Brasilian heros Fabio/Marcio.

From 2006-2010 he successfully teamed up with Florian Gosch. In this time he changed from a lazy player to a professional athlete. Silver at the Europeans Championships 2009 in Sotchi and the picture of the Olympics in Bejing, where they made it as a lucky loser to the quarterfinal by playing the ball via bicycle kick from the freezone, were the remarkable highlights.

After the retirement of Florian Gosch and a difficult year in 2011 Alex saw his only chance to qualify for the Olympics by changing partner and teamed up with Clemens Doppler. They reached their goal by taking the final ticket in the Continental Cup.

At the home European Championships in Klagenfurt 2013 everything was prepared for celebrations at home, but his partner injured during a game and the dream was over. 10 month later at the European Championship in Cagliari he took his second European Medal.

2015 is another chance to celebrate in front of the homecrowd in Austria and of course there are the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. Gold Silver Bronze – play for it!!!
