Built under the motto “SIM life should be practice life”, the Drone Racing League collaborated with leading physics and aeronautical experts to develop the next-generation DRL SIM 3.0. With the newly created simulator, anyone can try their hand at racing a drone, and maybe today’s beginner will be next year’s Swatch DRL Tryouts winner.
The DRL SIM 3.0 features next-level physics modeling validated against actual fight paths, which basically means that the new drone racing simulator is the most realistic version of its kind. It’s as close as you can get to racing a drone without going outside and flying the real thing. Among the most impressive features of the new simulator are the precise aerodynamics, advanced physics features and the built-in community sharing feature that lets you play with the open environment and share your developments with other pilots around the world.
As Official Partner of the Drone Racing League, one of the features we’re most excited about is the customization. Much like creating your own watch with Swatch X You , you can combine the modular parts to design something truly unique. There are over 260,000 drone combinations and 2,000 power combinations possible, and over 5,000 bench tests that provide real data against thrust, torque, RPM, voltage, current, temperature and more.
The developers have described designing the maps as an art form. A combination of out-of-this-world creativity and tried-and-trusted data is key to the design of the DRL SIM 3.0.
“One of the biggest challenges has been making sure that it’s fair; making sure that we hit all the points that the community expecrts us to,” said Nelson Aquino, QA/Lead Physics and Game Design and one of the developers behind the SIM 3.0 and the Swatch DRL Tryouts course. “We also want to make sure that it’s a really good show as well. So balancing those things has been really challenging, but I think we’ve done a pretty good job so far.”
No matter how scientifically advanced it is, you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to practice racing a drone in the simulator. The DRL SIM 3.0 is perfect for pilots of all levels. In addition to giving racers the chance to hone their skills with realistic training, the DRL SIM 3.0 also helps the sport and the community grow.
