Overlooking the Gruyère region in the Swiss canton of Fribourg, Moléson offers both an amazing panoramic view and excellent freeriding landscapes. In the third episode of “Secret Spots with Sam Anthamatten,” we discover Swiss tradition from new heights.
Sam actually discovered Moléson on wheels instead of skis when he went biking in the summer. Going back to this Swiss peak when everything was white instead of green was a new adventure for him.
Moléson’s highest point is at 2,002 meters and what is unique about this mountain is that the summit can be easily reached by cable car – the station is located at 1,982 meters. The Proteam skier describes Moléson as a paradise for freeriding: “Moléson is such an easy gateway to beautiful freeriding lines that are definitely one-of-a-kind in Switzerland.”
Back at the base of Moléson, you step out of a freerider’s wonderland and enter a gourmet’s paradise. Sam visited Gruyère’s local artisanal cheesemaker, Damian Raemy, who owns Fromagerie Hauteville. Sam took a look behind the scenes to see how the famous Gruyère cheese is produced.
“It’s true that the Gruyère AOP is very well-known, as is the Vacherin Fribourgeois. These two cheeses are really renowned specialties from the region,” Damian says.
He believes that another important specialty from the region is the Moléson.
“What I’ll remember from this trip is the hospitality that I received from Damian and also a ski teacher that I met and who I am still in touch with. I’ll definitely be coming back here,” Sam says.
With a range of lines and expositions, Moléson is a playground waiting to be explored and it’s in a key cultural area of Switzerland – making for the ultimate combination and a perfect day trip. As Sam mentions in this episode, safety should always come first and when you’re riding off the slopes, you should be prepared with proper avalanche equipment.
Sam, Swatch and MySwitzerland have a few more secret highlights to uncover at the top of the country. We’ve already brought some attention to the wonderland in Bosco Gurin. Stay tuned for more hidden gems and cultural experiences!
