The unexpected opportunity
December 19, 2018
The second episode of our video series, Life of a Drone Racer, follows freshly-minted pro racer UFO as he finds out that he has made the cut for the Drone Racing League season. He gets the call five days before the first race and his life changes completely.
In episode one , we see UFO race in the 2018 Swatch DRL Tryouts in New York City. He comes in second – among the best SIM drone pilots in the world, but unfortunately not good enough to qualify for the DRL season. Or so we thought... we leave our hero after he receives a surprising phone call and gets the news that he has indeed made it to the next round of racing and is officially a professional drone racer.
The second episode in the six-part series explores how UFO’s life has changed since that call and how he prepared for his first professional race.
“I didn’t really think there was a chance for me to get on the DRL,” UFO said. “Considering yourself to be part of that is really tough!”
In training for the race, UFO had to transition from the standard freestyle/race drone to the Racer3, which took some getting used to because it is heavier and also more agile and faster. Lucky for him, he has the perfect training arena: the Williamson Wines vineyard in Healdsburg, CA. There he has plenty of open space and beautiful views to run through ten to 20 battery packs a day.
UFO has been selected to accomplish something great. He’s motivated and working hard to meet those expectations and he’s ready to max out his potential. Simply put, it’s a dream come true. Can he keep up the momentum?
