The Beach Volleyball Major Series presented by Swatch has come and gone, but not without fierce competition and historic victories! The tournament in Gstaad, Switzerland called for special celebration – taking place July 9th-14th, it was the 20th anniversary of the popular event held in the stunning peaks of the Bernese Alps.
The A-Team from the US, Alex Klineman and April Ross, bounced back from a tough loss in the World Championship to win the golden cowbell in Gstaad. The Vikings from Norway, Anders Møl and Christian Sørum, defended their 2018 title and continued their winning streak in Vienna, collecting their 20th World Tour victory in a row. Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredas and Sarah Paven beat the Brazilians in their final match-up to win their third gold medal in the same month.
A sandy jubilee - The 2019 Swatch Major Gstaad marked the fifth time the tournament was part of the Beach Major Series, but is the 20th anniversary of the event itself. For six thrilling days, Gstaad welcomed the world’s top beach volleyball players. Bastian Baker, one of the biggest Swiss singer/songwriter artists, helped celebrate the anniversary with a performance on the center court. Swatch was also on site in Gstaad with a colorful pop-up shop where fans could browse the complete collection, including the new Swatch X JoAnouk design inspired by Proteam Athletes and beach volleyball pros Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré. The Swatch X You pattern was available exclusively for this event.
Va-va-Vienna - After Gstaad, Swatch packed up its things and headed to Vienna for the second installment of the Beach Major Series, the A1 Major Vienna presented by Swatch, on Danube Island in the Austrian capital. Austria is home to some of the most loyal beach volleyball fans – and they definitely proved it from July 31st through August 4th. Tens of thousands of spectators came together to cheer on their favorite elite players. To keep the energy going, Swatch hosted a meet and greet with Alexander Horst and Clemens Doppler, Swatch Proteam Athletes and local pro beach volleyball players, at its pop-up hub inspired by Viennese architecture. Fans could cool off in the shower and enter a contest to win an exclusive VIP experience.
See you next year!
