HOW TO RACE A DRONE LIKE A PRO
December 20, 2018
Snowboarder and HOW-TO teacher on the YouTube channel HOW TO XV, Xavier De Le Rue is no stranger to drones. He uses them to capture his own runs and the breathtaking mountains that serve as his playground. But he had never used a Racer3 drone until he met UFO. In the second episode of TRY TO XV, Xavier tries to race like a pro with help from a Drone Racing League pilot.
Before heading to the race course at the Allianz Riviera Stadium in Nice, France, Emmanuel “UFO” Moto takes his student to a park where he teaches Xavier the basics.
1. Before you fly, scope your line
2. Know your settings and configuration
3. Smooth stick adjustments
4. Steady posture, maintain concentration, and monitor drone orientation
UFO knows what he’s talking about – he went from simulator player to professional drone pilot last season after being hand-picked to advance from the Swatch DRL tryouts to the World Championships tour. He made a name for himself as a rookie in the 2018 racing season, which took him and the other pro pilots to advanced courses in cities like New York, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The next day, Xavier and UFO went to the Allianz Riviera Stadium where Xavier could try his hand at navigating the Racer3 drone through the DRL course.
“What these pilots are doing is really insane and, to be honest, I’m really inspired and excited to fly,” Xavier said before the racing began.
But soon after he said, “I thought I would be good at this!”
It turns out that racing a drone like a professional isn’t as easy as he imagined it would be. Xavier remains determined, convinced that this isn’t the last time he flies a Racer3 drone. The “pro” part might take some time though.
