Vikings conquer Vienna
November 15, 2018
From July 31 to August 5, thousands of fans rushed to Danube Island in Vienna, Austria to see the top 32 men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams compete for the Vienna Major title. We were particularly excited to cheer on our very own Proteam athletes and hometown favorites Clemens Doppler and Alex Horst.
But cheering for our Proteam beach volleyball players wasn’t the only thing we were doing at the Vienna Major. Our Swatch Truck was on site and was a hub of activities where spectators could come and enjoy themselves between matches. Prizes were awarded on our own version of Wheel of Fortune and Clemens and Alex came by for a special signing session with fans. True beach volleyball enthusiasts were able to purchase the exclusive event watch.
The fans in the arena were on fire the whole week, cheering on their favorite teams and keeping the energy on full blast. The dynamic duo made up of Proteam beach volleyball stars Clemens and Alex, who won silver at the 2017 World Championships on the same court, made it to the quarter-finals where they played against and lost to Anders Mol and Christian Sørum from Norway.
“This crowd, I’m speechless, this is what it is all about,” said Clemens afterward. “It gives you goosebumps and it is carrying us forward. We were disappointed to lose earlier in the day but that result shows there is quality around the world when it comes this sport.”
The Viking duo had just won the tournament in Gstaad and they kept their winning streak going by first beating the Austrian favorites and later securing a 21-12, 21-17 victory over the Polish team. Not only is their second Major win in a row, but it also brought their streak of unbeaten matches to 19! Can they be stopped?
