We swapped our sneakers for snow boots to enjoy the legendary LAAX OPEN on January 13-18, and Swatch was thrilled to be there as an event partner for the second year in a row.
Swatch headed up to Laax for the most important European snowboarding event on the slopes and superpipe of the resort that has been at the forefront of the snowboarding movement for more than 30 years.
Jaw-dropping moves, non-stop energy and high-flying creativity: the LAAX OPEN and Swatch have a lot in common, and with our previous projects with freeskiers and snow lovers, it’s no surprise that we were back again at the LAAX OPEN 2020.
At the GaLaaxy and rocksresort, we entertained fans and spectators with brand challenges and entertainment. Sam Anthamatten and Swatch Proteam Athlete Nico Vuignier joined us on Saturday and took over our social media accounts to give followers a behind-the-scenes tour of the competition. The exclusive and limited event watch was released at the LAAX OPEN on January 16th, with pieces available at the pop-up Swatch Store and online for Swatch lovers and LAAX OPEN fanatics around the world.
After a week of bluebird skies, the LAAX OPEN ended with a bang (and some light snowfall) with the highly anticipated Halfpipe Night Finals. Thousands of spectators lined up along the LAAX Superpipe on Crap Sogn Gion to watch the best halfpipe riders do their thing. Queralt Castellet (SPA) and Scotty James (AUS) claimed the prestigious LAAX OPEN Halfpipe titles, taking home not only the trophy but also CHF 25,000 each.
Queralt was 3rd in 2018 and 2nd in 2019, finally making it to the top of the podium, she said: “I’m super stoked. A dream came true winning here in LAAX. It’s my favorite place to ride, my favorite pipe to ride. I’m out of words!”
Scotty James was the snowboarder to watch as he defended his LAAX OPEN title and continued his winning streak, making this one his ninth victory in a row.
Scotty said: “I feel absolutely amazing, I knew tonight was going to be really tough. I knew Yuto was going to bring it, so I was ready to go for it in the 2nd run if I had to. I didn’t take anything for granted, but it sure is sweet being able to have a victory lap like this. Thanks to everyone coming out, all the people of LAAX, it means the world to me.”
Earlier in the day, the very first LAAX OPEN TAG TEAM Crossover Slopestyle Session took place: a new showcase with freeskiers and snowboarders riding the upper section of the course. Six mixed teams with three riders each had to hit the course together and be creative as a team. The true spirit of Freestyle sports was on display, as it was all about having fun riding together with your buddies. Team SERENITY with Fabio Studer (Ski), Maxi Preissinger (Snowboard) and local rider Xeno Lehnherr (Ski) took home the first-ever TAG TEAM title.
For decades, the LAAX OPEN has been all about freestyle, and throughout the competitions and warm-ups, that spirit was felt by every single person in LAAX: snowboarders and skiers alike. Spectacular riding, big-air creativity and electric energy: we can’t wait to be back in 2021!
